The specific article I chose as my artifact is about Trump's travel ban. While campaigning to be President of the United States, Trump kept repeating that we would keep our country safe from terrorism and stop illegal immigrants from coming to America. On January 27th Trump signed an executive order which, for the moment, denies citizens from the seven Muslim countries into the U.S. Citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen may enter the country if their visas are valid. This visa process is supposed to help stop terrorists from entering so that something like 9/11 does not happen again. The people who hijacked the plane were from Saudi Arabia which is a place that is not included on the travel ban. Also this ban does not include the places where the most recent attacks have taken place. This article questions whether it is a travel ban or should rather be called a Muslim ban. The Muslim religion was not specifically mentioned but they seem to be targeting Muslims with the travel ban. Trump has defended his order of the travel ban stating that this is "not a Muslim ban" and that this ban has nothing to do with religion. It is about what he has been saying throughout his campaign, that it is to keep our country safe. Of all the countries that were banned, Iran should be affected the most. Around half of the visas distributed were given to Iranians last year. The United States will not be letting any refugees in for the next four months while procedures are being reviewed. The Obama administration hoped the country would accept 110,000 refugees and instead under Trump's executive order they limited it to 50,000 refugees.
The method I will be applying to my artifact in my term paper will be ideological criticism. During the selection of ideological criticism I need to consider what do the specific elements suggest, how to these elements for an ideology, and what the clear ideological intent is. I think this method is most appropriate because there are many different ideologies within my artifact and in some ways the meaning of this article can be interpreted differently.
